Coming to all corners of Vietnam, tourists can see peasant women in their conical hats working in green rice paddies and children playing with their buffalos on the roads. Only a half hours hydrofoil trip from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is where the Vietnamese flock each weekend to get some respite from another busy week ahead. The season for kitesurfing in Mui Ne is just starting now. Unlike the children I taught at school in Tokyo, or people at large, those whom I stopped to chat with on the road were keen to ask me questions. North of the town, there are two beaches, Doc Let and Jungle Beach.

This is a great option for those who wish to combine interesting touring with time spent relaxing on the beach. And the times on the road when I would prepare my mind for one of the many long tunnels I had to face. Mui Ne has the best conditions in all of Asia for water sports because it has Asia's strongest and most consistent cross-onshore winds and the lowest rainfall in Vietnam.
